Evolution of a Trolllkin

Hey all,

I thought that for this post, I'd share some insight into the development process I went through with the good folks over at Kobold Press while working on their new character race the Trollkin.

I'm a longtime D&D gamer and in fact I cut my teeth on 2nd Edition and Dragon Lance modules and I'm always "game" to work on fantasy ip's.  So when the team at Kobold quarterly approached me to help them develop this new race for their setting, I was pretty stoked at the opportunity to create something relatively "New" to the fantasy world.  No Pressure right?..

So, the initial brief was for a playable race that is half human, half bad guy called a Trollkin. Trollkin are the product of interbreeding between a monster race like a Troll / Ogre and a human. Genetically, they are very diverse and it was very difficult to nail down a "look" for these guys. Well, it's pretty tough to nail these things on the first pass so I whipped up some really rough sketches to show my Art Director a couple of options for the Trollkin's look to help us hone in something that works. This first image is simply a series of heads to indicate some character and a sketch of a humanoid creature with a spear.
After this stage, the AD was able to have some visuals and was able to identify what he didn't like and provide me some direction moving forward. Next we have another image which is again pretty rough but it contained enough information for the AD to see that we were on the same page.

Ok, so now we are getting somewhere. Next I moved on to a tight drawing that incorporates all of the accumulated information thus far.

Once again, I sent off another email to my AD to show him this image and get some final feedback and approval to move onto the finished image.

Finally, we arrived at the completed image that everybody is happy with. You'll notice the differences in this last image are rather subtle but do give the image just enough extra " Umph". Some things we changed were the addition of a shield, more pronounced claws, bigger spines on his back, more and "bushier" hair etc.

All of these images were completed digitally in Photoshop and that is the primary software that I use for illustration. I hope that you found this article informative and please drop me a line if you have any questions.

Cheers!

The Banshee of Newry

Today I am posting a personal piece that I did for the art book for this years Calgary Comi Expo. The Theme is " Weird Tales" and I based mine off of an account by my Stepfather of a Banshee in his hometown of Newry in Northern Ireland. The name Banshee mean's Fairy Woman and to hear her wailing is considered a premonition of death. Tom has all kinds of stories about these things from back home and I couldn't resist taking a stab at illustrating one.

Here we go with some Firefly/ Serenity Fan Art that I am working on and hoping to have completed for the upcoming Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. Keep your fingers crossed.

I whittled it down to 2 main ideas and both focus on the Browncoats. One image is intended to be more of a propaganda/ recruitment poster and the second image is intended to look more like a book cover/ movie poster.  In a perfect world, I would create both but seeing as how time is short, I'll be lucky to complete one in time for the show.

Anyways, take a look and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers!

Hey all,

Today I am posting up a finished version of my Firefly/ Serenity "Browncoat" recruitment poster. Previously, I had posted up a link to just the drawing as a WIP on facebook and I got ripped for making a spelling error so here's hoping that I didn't make any more. lol ;)

Anyways, on to the piece.

Here are some up close images of the various character portraits.
Mal ( Nathan Fillion)
Zoey ( Gina Torres)
Tracy ( Johnathan M. Woodward)

I also have several variants besides the full color version and you can see those below.

Painting Mal

Hey Gang,

Keeping in line with my recent Brown Coat Propaganda Poster image, I thought that I'd post up a
"How I Painted Mal" process article.

Malcolm Reynolds AKA Nathan Fillion is a pain in the butt to paint. The reason being is his features are very unique yet subtle. His nose and chin/jaw are very prominent yet difficult to get right. Needless to say, I've wasted many pages in my sketch book just trying to get it right and so far, this painting, I think, is my best attempt to date. You be the judge.

The process that I am outlining below is not neccesarily typical for me but in this instance I think it worked out. The intent was to give the image a poster feeling and how could a guy NOT be influenced by the great Drew Struzan? So ,I decided to emulate his technique some what and here is how I did it.

First off, I started with an under drawing. Some guys just launch straight into paint but I'm just not built that way. I like to think of the drawing stage as building the skeleton of the finished work. The more accurate that I can get this stage, the less guess work that I have to do later.
Next, I completed a monochromatic under painting over top of the drawing. This helps me to work out the basic values and forms as well as establishing a uniform tone to the whole piece. The Browncoats are always depicted as dirty and sandy so I chose to use a tan color for this stage.
On top of the under painting, I now go in with my digital airbrush and block in my colors. This is what I borrow from Mr Struzan as he is a master at this part of the process. He is a lot more subtle with the airbrush and chooses to rely more heavily on his drawing skills to refine the forms in his work. For me, I just wanted to quickly establish the overall color scheme.
Now we get into the fun and laborious part that some people call rendering. For this stage, I pretty much kept to my chalk brush and blocked in the forms being conscious of establishing the planes and over all tonal management.  I'm particularly inspired by the Premier Coup method as championed by the great portraitist John Howard Sanden and I can't help but gravitate to using his methods at this stage. I confess that I initially intended to go " Full Struzan" on this piece and get down and dirty with pencil like mark making but this just felt more natural to me and more importantly, more consistent with the period poster look that I was going for.
This is the final stage. To achieve this, I spent a lot of time noodling around pushing pixels and further refining the image until I was satisfied with the final rendering. After that, I played around with some adjustment layers in photo shop and voila!
I hope that you found this article somewhat useful and please let me know if you have any comments or questions as I'm always happy to hear from you.

Cheers!

Battle of Serenity Valley

So I finally finished my second Firefly image that I started a while back. This one is more of a narrative depicting our favorite characters Mal and Zoey in all their Browncoat glory at the Battle of Serenity Valley. I used the same paintings of Zoey and Tracy and did a different version of Mal and this time I rendered the Independence logo as if it were a medal.
I think I scratched the Firefly itch for now...

I'll be at the Calgary Comic Expo this weekend at my booth #1006 Rocket Punch Studios. Please stop by and say hi!

People who hate Bob Ross probably advocate drowning kittens!

I was trolling the internet the other day and came across the Bob Ross remix video and I just had to re post this. If you are an artist and this doesn`t put a smile on your face then that sucks for you. I`ve met lots of artists who have an unreasonable amount of Hate for this man and his work which I attribute to jealousy. Sure, he`s no Rembrant. But, in his time, he made a significant impact on the painting community as a whole and inspired millions in his lifetime. He has such an encouraging attitude which I think is very important for beginning painters. Learning the medium can be very intimidating and he helped millions to overcome that. I still have `The Joy of Painting`sitting on my bookshelf and I just like looking at it for what it is.  I personally think he was under rated as a painter by the art community because of his commercial success. But when you look a this ability to create a composition and his mastery of his technique, I suggest that he was a bonafide Master painter in his own right. In fact, I had a throw down with my wife the other day because I claimed that Bob Ross was a better painter than Emily Carr who I think is incredibly over rated. lol ;) needless to say that didn`t go over very well.

Anyways, enjoy the Ross Video.

The Making of Hon El

$

Hey Gang,

Today I am going to share my process for creating the illustration "Hon El the Dancer" for Moon Design Publications's up coming "Guide to Glorantha".

To preface this article, I'd like to explain that the world of Glorantha was created over 40 years ago and is probably the most richly detailed and complex setting that I have ever worked in. I've worked on over 20 illustrations for Moon Design Publications and pretty much all of them come with very specific and detailed art direction like the following document.

Art Direction:
OK, this is an "In-Gloranthan" piece that decorates the wall of the Temple of Hon-Eel in the city of Furthest (where the goddess Hon-Eel founded the ruling dynasty). It depicts the goddess Hon-Eel the Dancer overcoming the horse barbarians and enthralling the storm barbarians, bringing both the Lunar Way. Stylistically, this should be a cross between the color and dynamism of Etruscan tomb paintings (http://www.anatomyofnorbiton.org/images/Etruscan-monsters-fs.png) and the movement and grace of ancient Hindu-Buddhist devotional art.

I've attached a picture by another artist of scene from this culture, just to help with the feel.

Background: The goddess Hon-Eel is the daughter of the Red Emperor (the god-king of the Lunar Empire that is like an ancient Assyria ruled by a Greco-Buddhist mystery cult). The Lunar Empire was desolated by horse barbarian attacks in its early years. After the barbarians were defeated, Hon-eel appeared and renewed the empire. She restored provincial lands which had drifted from Lunar rule as a result of the barbarian attacks, settled new lands, drove the last of the horsemen off, and discovered a new food grain, maize, for Peloria. Hon-Eel brought the Lunar Way to the storm barbarians and founded a mighty royal dynasty. Hon-eel danced her way to the end of the universe and brought back rich blessings of fertility for all who were wise enough to call on her.

Picture: This picture is a color fresco, based on the attached sketch (Hon-Eel.jpg):

A. Hon-Eel the Dancer. Hon-Eel is a graceful, beautiful woman. She is dancing, balanced on her right foot (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Apasara_Img445.jpg). Her left foot is on her right knee, and she holds forth a bundle of maize. She wears golden bracelets, armlets, anklets, and necklaces (like http://www.inst.at/trans/16Nr/05_1/sengupta_08.jpg). She wears a beaded skirt (like http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Apsara_441.jpg or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLA_lacma_Celestial_Nymph_ca_1450_Rajasthan.jpg.)
Her skin is golden-brown and her hair red. Hon-Eel's eyes are green. She is not tattooed.
Behind her head is an ornate halo like http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Apsara_441.jpg, but glowing red.
In her left arm she holds a bundle of maize. In her right hand she carries a bronze sickle that is dripping blood.

Hon-Eel is flanked by two ripe maize plants.

B. Red Goddess. Above Hon-Eel is her grandmother, the Red Moon Goddess. She is seated in a lotus position and making a gesture of peace (the Abhaya Mudra, see http://www.cambosastra.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Mudra.jpg). Her skin is red and she is surrounded by a glowing red halo like Hon-Eel.  She is either naked or wears a gown covered with stars (see plate01final.jpg).

C. Red Emperor. Watching Hon-Eel, and giving his blessing is the Solar Emperor (who in various incarnations is the Sun God, the son of the Red Moon, the father of Hon-Eel, and her lover). He is based on the Emperor Yelm.jpg, His garments are golden, as are the wings, but the disk is red like the moon.

D. Dead Orlanthi King. Hon-Eel dances atop the corpse of a dead Orlanthi king (like Kali does with Shiva, see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/Kali_1800-1825_Kangra._The_Walters_Art_Museum..jpghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Goddess_Bhadrakali_Worshipped_by_the_Gods-_from_a_tantric_Devi_series_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kali_lithograph.jpg). The king is bearded and wears a crown, a golden neck ring or torc, and golden spiral arm ring. He has a bronze sword (symbolizing his violent nature). He is tattooed with Air, Movement, and Mastery. Bonus points if he has the same tribal tattoo as Arim the Pauper did in the previous commission - this is Arim's distant heir, King Pyjeemsab. Pyjeemsab was entranced by Hon-Eel's beauty. He was killed after the marital conjugation (perhaps during it), but nine months later, Hon-Eel gave birth to his son and heir, who became the new king of a new dynasty (that worships Hon-Eel as a goddess).

E. Defeated Horse Queen. This is the Queen of the Horse Tribes. She's much smaller because she is a barbarian. She is riding a horse and wears an ornate costume like that of the Scythians (eg http://www.cais-soas.com/CAIS/Images2/General/Iranian_Women_Warriors.JPG or http://realtruth.org/images/scythian-ashz-120523.jpg (on the left)). She has her hands up in worship of Hon-Eel.

F. Worshipful Storm Barbarian. This is a bearded Orlanthi barbarian (one of Arim's people). He carries a sword but has his hands up in worship of Hon-Eel.

The art direction was very specific so I put together 2 Comps for the AD to look at with my preliminary ideas.
After discussing the image with my AD ( Jeff Richard), he was on board for my idea to do this illustration in the style of Alphonse Mucha. This was great news to me because I greatly admire Mucha's work and it is always nice to pitch an idea to a client and have it accepted.

Next I completed 4 more rough sketches incorporating my ideas and all of the various symbology.

Once we settled on the various compositional elements that we liked, I set out to incorporate all of them into the image as well as some Mucha inspired design elements. These next 3 images depict the various stages in the evolution of the final drawing.

In this stage I had masked off the various elements and on a separate layer, I had flatted in the basic color scheme for the image.
 Final illustration.

Sketchbook and Studies + Reilly Method too!

Hey all,

I was going through my files today and I realized that I have not posted any studies or Sketchbook stuff in a long while. According to my blog's statistics, I get a lot of hits related to my Reilly Method studies and since I have not really stopped doing them, I thought that I'd get back on the horse and share. All of these studies are digital but I do still scribble in my sketchbook. I have not gotten around to scanning anything from there but when I do, I'll post those up as well.  I apologize if some of the images are doubled up in one or two pics but that is just how things came out this time around.

Thanks for tuning in and let me know what you think.

Cheers!

Reilly Method quick Portraits. I try to do these in under 10 minutes each.

So for a while there I was on a Predator kick and I was doing some studies of the various characters. My favorite was always "Blaine" played by Jesse Ventura. I still have plans for these....
 Gestures and quick studies.
The two on the right were drawn using the palette knife in PS. There is something about that tool that gives the drawings a nice mark and energy. I don't know why I don't use it more!
